Background
“Out from the Northern Wastelands came the hordes of Chaos. Savage and unstoppable they swept through Kislev and into the Empire itself leaving death and destruction in their wake. One by one the great cities of Middenheim, Altdorf and Nuln fell. The Emperor Maximillian IV, with the remainder of his army, was forced to flee to Bretonnia.

“There, in the city of Parravon at the foot of the Grey Mountains, his was joined by human armies from Bretonnia, Estallia and the Tilean city states as well as many demi-humans. If the Old World was to survive, the hordes of Chaos would to be stopped at Grey Mountains. In the bloodiest series of battles since the days of Sigmar, the allies forces held the forces of Chaos at bay. Parravon stood firm.

“Years have past. A new border has been drawn. Though the encroachment of Chaos has been halted for now, Chaos still reigns in all the lands east of the Grey Mountains. Even the most optimistic observers find it hard to envisage a day when the Empire can be restored.

“The collapse of the Empire was so swift that much had to be left behind. Spread throughout the cities of the former Empire are invaluable treasures and powerful artefacts that would be invaluable in the war effort. There are also rumours of pockets of survivors who were caught behind the enemy lines and who are doomed unless some sort of rescue mission can be arranged.

“To this effect The Emperor in exile with the assistance of the Court Wizard Guglielmini, has established a special force dedicated to infiltration missions into the Chaos controlled cities of the former Empire. Gugliemini is always looking out for adventurers who are experienced and brave enough to conduct these operations beyond the lines. Adventurers who succeed in three missions are offered permanent positions with the force as well as honorary titles.

“But the Emperor’s men are not the only adventurers to defy death in search of treasures. Less scrupulous freelancers can sometimes be found among the ruins of the mighty Empire looking for a quick path to riches but more often finding a quick grave. These. freelancers must watch themselves not only from the denizens of Chaos, but from the emperor’s own men.”

The Quests

Even though the encounters are randomly generated, it is still important that the players have a clear objective in mind. The following quests are based in the Warhammer world, at a time when the Old Empire has been overrun by Chaos.

No.DescriptionSpecial Notes
1 The evacuation of Altdorf was a very hasty affair. As a result a colossal mistake was made and the most holy reliquary which the worldly remains of Sigmar was somehow left behind. It must be retrieved before the forces of Chaos discover it. The reliquary is hidden in the secret crypt of the temple of Sigmar. Use tomb in quest room.
2 An old map maker of Nuln called Jorge Vilny had maps of the tunnels that run below the Grey Mountains in his workshop. These must be found and destroyed. Use a bookshelf in quest room.
3 Next full moon is the festival of Khaine, a minor Chaos god. It is known that the Chaos Champion Lotharius is a follower of Khaine and it is expected he will be present at the rituals in the Chapel of Blood. It would be a good occasion to eliminate one of Chaos’s most dangerous leaders. Use altar in Quest room. Do not roll on Boss Monster table in quest room.
4 The evil Elf Queen Jerazil is conducting experiments distorting nature to create more and more twisted beastmen. Taal, god of nature, is most upset by this state of affairs. The druids assure us of his gratitude in the coming days if only we could stop her. Replace the Undead with Beastmen in all the table results. Do not roll on Boss Monster table in quest room.

At the end of the players turn, flip a coin to see on which side the Fire Mage fights. If the Fire Mage is on the party’s side, they must guard him to the exit.
7 There is a temple devoted to Shallya up in the Middle Mountains. This temple was built around a magical spring known for its healing properties. A black necromancer going by the name of Lord Grakken has twisted the properties of the spring to create an army of undead. Guglielmini will provide a wand capable of casting one Ball of Flames to blast the spring away and prevent it being misued ever again. Replace the Beastmen with Undead in all the table results. Do not roll on Boss Monster table in quest room.Grakken will not be present. However he will have left a Gargoyle to defend the spring.
8 Horrific reports are coming from a small town on the Aver river. It appears an ogre named Gumphilmash is boasting about his discovery of a pocket of refugees and is proceeding to eat them, one by one. Do not roll on Boss Monster table in quest room. Gumphilmash is an Ogre Chieftain with 1d4 Body.
9 The forces of Chaos are preparing to summon into this world a foul, unnameable demon to launch against Parravon. It is believed Lord Grakken will perform the ceremony. The ritual must be distributed. Flip a coin. On heads use Lord Grakken in the quest room. Else use a Fire Wizard
